Решение


Миф о медленной конкатенации


Очевидный неправильный ответ: конкатенация — это медленно (во всяком случае — медленнее, чем StringBuilder).
Миф о медленной конкатенации, вероятнее всего, уходит своими корнями в пример, демонстрирующий влияние иммутабельности строк на вычислительную сложность алгоритма:

Что вообще произошло?


1. String.format() ожидаемо оказался самым медленным результатом — это и применение регулярок, и создание вспомогательных объектов, и множество валидаций строки шаблона и аргументов. Если сравнивать с MessageFormat.format(), который у нас вне конкурса, то по наблюдениям на разных шаблонах можно получить разные результаты — в каких-то случаях быстрее один способ, в каких-то другой. В нашем случае MessageFormat.format() оказался быстрее. При этом его результат можно было ещё существенно ускорить, если переиспользовать объект MessageFormat повторно, — в этом случае будут сэкономлены ресурсы на парсинг шаблона.

2. Использование StringBuilder и обычной конкатенации дали одинаковый результат. Чуть большее время бенчмарка со StringBuilderобман зрения результат незначительных флуктуаций.

Что вообще произошло?


1. String.format() и MessageFormat.format() нам не так интересны.

2. Результат StringBuilder оказался лучше примерно в 1.5 раза. И тут уже не до случайностей.

Разберём в деталях, что мы видим:
  1. В методе, где была конкатенация строк, сейчас создание объекта StringBuilder.
  2. Тела методов очень похожи, но отличаются способом создания StringBuilder — в случае самописного использования StringBuilder вызывается конструктор, принимающий строку на вход, а в варианте с конкатенацией StringBuilder создаётся путём вызова пустого конструктора.
  3. В результате создания пустого StringBuilder требуется дополнительный вызов StringBuilder.append().

Как так получилось, что один единственный дополнительный вызов StringBuilder.append() привёл к снижению производительности?
Посмотрим на конструкторы:

Оказывается, что и append-то никуда не делся — он вызывается внутри конструктора. Тем не менее, ответ кроется в этом участке кода, а именно в числе 16: авторы StringBuilder предусмотрительно выделили дополнительное место под 16 символов в буфере при создании объекта.

Когда мы создали StringBuilder и положили в него первую строку metrics, передав её в конструкторе, у нас ещё оставалось 16 символов в запасе, прежде чем нужно будет расширить буфер (массив символов AbstractStringBuilder.value). По случайному совпадению два пробела, число 1 и значение timestamp уложились ровно в 16 символов.

С другой стороны, созданный пустым StringBuilder оказался не готов вместить в себя строку metrics и буфер был пересоздан. Но и тут всё оказывается не так просто.

Когда в StringBuilder не хватает места при очередном append, осуществляется попытка создать буфер вдвое больший, чем был ранее (length * 2 + 2 если быть точнее).
Если не удаётся (когда в двойной буфер добавляемая строка по-прежнему не помещается, что у нас и произошло при добавлении идентификатора метрики metrics), то создаётся буфер, длина которого равна count + len, где count — уже занятое место в буфере, а len — длина добавляемой строки. В примере с нашей метрикой count == 0, а len == 275.
Таким образом, первый вызов StringBuilder.append() привёл к созданию нового массива символов с длиной 275.
Второй вызов также привёл к повторному созданию массива, так как идентификатор метрики полностью занимал весь буфер. Кроме того, что размер буфера стал равен 275 * 2 + 2 = 552, так ещё потребовалось копирование 275 символов из старого буфера. И тут уже никакой JIT не помог.

Правильный ответ на задачу


Вариант 1 самый медленный, а 2 и 3 дают одинаковый результат.

В нашем примере для обоих вариантов 2 и 3 HotSpot применил оптимизацию OptimizeStringConcat, заменив вызов Java-кода на использование intrinsic-методов. Если отключить оптимизацию -XX:-OptimizeStringConcat, то получим следующие результаты:

Статистика


Эта задача была самой простой из предложенных — её правильно решили 10 человек из 32 и ещё 18 участников конференции дали частично правильный ответ.

Частично правильный ответ заключался в том, что, например, методы расставлены правильно, но пояснения к ответу никакого дано не было, либо оно было верно только от части.

Самый распространённый ответ по 2 и 3 — javac выдаёт одинаковый байткод. Несмотря на то, что это не совсем так, как мы выяснили выше — данный ответ засчитывался как правильный.

Интересные факты


В одном из пояснений было верно подмечено, что компиляция конкатенации в StringBuilder не специфицирована. В разделе 15.18.1 спецификации упоминается следующее:
An implementation may choose to perform conversion and concatenation in one step to avoid creating and then discarding an intermediate String object. To increase the performance of repeated string concatenation, a Java compiler may use the StringBuffer class or a similar technique to reduce the number of intermediate String objects that are created by evaluation of an expression.

Интересно, что в спецификации к Java 8 говорится о StringBuffer, тогда как с Java 1.5 (когда появился StringBuilder) код конкатенации компилируется в StringBuilder. При этом в Java 1.4 код метода formatThroughConcatenation компилируется в байткод, единственным отличием которого является использование StringBuffer вместо StringBuilder.

За генерацию специализированных методов makeConcatWithConstants отвечает StringConcatFactory. Специализация заключается в том, что для каждого случая генерируется отдельный метод: для MetricsFormat создался makeConcatWithConstants-метод, принимающий String, int и long, а из тела MetricsFormat.formatThroughConcatenation() ушла загрузка строковых констант (опкод ldc).
По умолчанию в StringConcatFactory выполняется стратегия Strategy.MH_INLINE_SIZED_EXACT — генерация с использованием MethodHandle с предварительным вычислением размера буфера, равного размеру результирующей строки:

Это позволило обойти проблемы при форматировании строки с метрикой, наблюдавшиеся в сгенерированном коде для Java 8. Но так может получаться не всегда, как в случае примера из нашей задачи — результат хуже примерно на четверть. Результат получился хуже как относительно StringBuilder, так и по отношению к результату на Java 8.

OptimizeStringConcat


Интересен и тот факт, что метод MetricsFormat.formatThroughConcatenation() показал в 4 раза лучший результат по сравнению с MetricsFormat.formatThroughBuilder()!
Дело в том, что это не makeConcatWithConstants так быстр, как недостаточно хорошо оптимизирован метод с вызовом StringBuilder. Как верно заметил apangin ниже в комментариях: заменив тип timestamp с long на int можно обнаружить, что разница между двумя реализациями уже не будет такой существенной.

Особенность этого примера заключается в том, что -XX:+OptimizeStringConcat не работает для StringBuilder.append(long), а появившийся в Java 9 механизм Indify String Concatenation лишён этого недостатка.

Заключение


За рамками обсуждения остались compile-time оптимизации конкатенаций, о которых можно почитать в разделе спецификации, на который уже ссылался ранее (15.18.1), что тоже довольно любопытно.

Ожидаемо поплохело варианту MetricsFormat.formatThroughConcatenation().
А вот с оптимизацией pop/aload в MetricsFormat.formatThroughBuilder() JIT-компилятор справился отлично — полученный результат по производительности ничем не отличается от зачейненного варианта. Тем не менее, обе версии использования StringBuilder не являются эквивалентными, например, OptimizeStringConcat умеет распознавать только зачейненный вариант использования StringBuilder.

    За задачи и разбор +1, но делать выводы о производительности по байткоду не совсем корректно, как я показывал в презентации. Замени, например, timestamp с long на int и сравни заново… Довод про конструктор StringBuilder развалился на глазах, правда? И выводы будут уже совсем другие.

    В этой же презентации про конкатенацию, кстати, тоже есть. Нельзя бенчмаркать StringBuilder и не упомянуть фичу Хотспота под названием OptimizeStringConcat.

      За исключением тех случаев, когда javac генерирует идентичный байткод. :) В остальном согласен, и чем дальше (тот же JEP-280), тем поведение JIT-компилятора становится менее предсказуемым.

      О, точно, я уже под утро заканчивал статью и про OptimizeStringConcat совсем забыл, а это важная штука.

    Касательно корректности рассуждений о производительности с учётом огромного числа эвристик HotSpot'а: задача объяснить наблюдаемое поведение выглядит значительно привлекательнее задачи оценки или сравнения производительности алгоритмов.
    Но выбор в пользу первого варианта объяснялся форматом проведения викторины на конференции, когда по ответам можно было быстро отсортировать решения и уже дальше смотреть пояснения к ответам. В следующий раз стоит выбрать детерминированный вариант задач.

    JIT-то тут при чём? Основную работу делает собственно фабрика, генерируя цепочку методхэндлов, которые сперва считают суммарную длину всех строк, затем выделяют один массив точно нужного размера и всовывают его в строку через небезопасный конструктор.

      Согласен, в этом месте влияние JIT не настолько существенное — выше Андрей apangin намекнул на различия в определении длины строки под long в StringBuilder и StringConcatFactory. apangin, я же правильно понял, что речь об этом?

        Да, и ещё то, что с int типом будет уже не важно, создаётся ли StringBuilder() с размером по умолчанию или StringBuilder(metrics) с заранее предопределённым размером. В обоих случаях паттерн new StringBuilder(*).append()...append().toString() скомпилируется как интринсик без вызова Java кода, и производительность Concatenation vs. StringBuilder будет одинаковая, несмотря на различия в байткоде.


        Если же в цепочке попадётся append(long), то оптимизация не отработает — ну, не реализовали почему-то в JDK 8), то есть, будет честный вызов Java кода.

          Судя по изменениям в stringopts.cpp в JDK 10/JDK 9 относительно JDK 8, то в новых версиях это по-прежнему не оптимизируется.

            Ну так потому что уже особо не надо: JEP-280 срабатывает в подавляющем большинстве случаев (кроме модуля java.base и вручную написанных StringBuilder'ов). По сути дела и существующую оптимизацию если удалить, сильно хуже не станет.

              Как сказать… не пересобирать же из исходников все 100500 подключаемых библиотек, скомпилированных под Java 6-7-8.

                Я думаю, какой-нибудь jlink проще научить обновлять байткод в таких ситуациях. Все же пользуются jlink начиная с Java 9 ;-)
